Records show that a team representing Ramsgate played in the Kent League between 1909 and 1914. Ramsgate Town FC were formed in 1919 and joined the Kent League. Mr and Lady Weigal generously obtained the Southwood ground for the club. In their first season Ramsgate finished third in the league and reached the Kent Senior Cup final, but lost 0-1 to Northfleet at Maidstone before a crowd of 10,000 people. Ramsgate Grenville had been a strong local side at this time, but had to disband as they couldn’t find a ground. Many of their players joined Ramsgate’s second team. Ramsgate finished the 1920-21 season in 4th place even though they fielded a number of reserves in the latter part of the season in order to cut costs. Money was short and Ramsgate started the 1922/23 season with mainly amateur players. They languished at the foot of the table before pulling up and finished in the middle of the table. Grenville had restarted this season playing at the Warre Recreation ground and they won the Thanet League. The 1923/24 season was a disaster for Ramsgate Town who finished bottom of the Kent League and folded. Southwood was eventually taken over by Grenville. In the early 1930’s, local newsagent Eddie Butcher was primarily responsible for the rebirth of senior football in Ramsgate. He helped form a team of newsboys, the "Press Wanderers", and they started off in the Thanet League. With the generous help of the Harrison Family, a new ground was purchased at Dumpton. Press Wanderers, now with semi pro. Players, were elected to the Kent League Div.2 for the 1932/33 season. Grenville were also in the Kent League at this time and there were some keen derby
